Photograph used items without hiding the flaws

A simple shot plan that helps a buyer understand exactly what is included and what condition it is in.

By Resale Kit Studio · Updated October 1, 2026

Build a repeatable setup

A clean background and soft light make the item easier to read. Put the work surface near a window with indirect light or use a diffused lamp. Harsh direct light can wash out texture and make shiny surfaces difficult to photograph. Keep the camera stable and check focus before taking the full set. A phone is enough for many everyday items. Good preparation matters more than adding filters. Keep a folder of the original images so you can compare any edits with the actual item.

Photograph the whole object first

Take a front, back, side, top and bottom view where each reveals something useful. For a set, show all included pieces together, then photograph distinguishing pieces separately. Clothing needs an overall front and back view, size and care labels, and relevant closures. A buyer should not have to guess what is on the other side or how many pieces are included. Avoid including decorative props that could be mistaken for part of the purchase.

Give condition its own pictures

Move closer for chips, scratches, stains, repairs and missing parts. Take a close photo of the flaw and a wider photo showing its location. Use the same lighting for both. Include maker marks, model labels and details that support the identity. If scale is difficult to judge, add a ruler photo and state the actual measurement in the description. A ruler should supplement a clear measurement, not replace it.

Edit the background, preserve the evidence

Cropping and a simple background can improve clarity. Check that an edit has not removed a damaged edge, changed the apparent color or added a shape that was not there. If you use a background remover such as ClearCutPhoto, inspect the whole outline at a larger size before uploading. Keep the unedited source. The condition photo should still show the real flaw.

Review the photos and description together

Read the description while looking through the final photo order. Measurements, included pieces and condition should agree. Remove blurry or redundant images and put the clearest overall view first. eBay has current image requirements and policies that should be checked before publication. Our free checklist gives you a reusable shot plan, but it does not replace those marketplace rules.
